NVIDIA B300 vs H200: Which AI Server Should You Buy in 2026?

Category: Industry News | Published: 2026-11-02 | Views: 3

The most common question in 2026 AI server procurement is simple: what is the real difference between B300 and H200, and where should the budget go? They are not a simple new-versus-old replacement. Each maps to a different workload profile and cost structure. Here is a comparison across architecture, memory, compute, power and use cases.

1. Specification comparison

2. Where B300 wins

B300 roughly doubles H200 in memory and bandwidth, and FP4 is purpose-built for low-precision inference. It solves the "model too large, context too long, does not fit on one node" problem: a model that previously needed 16 H200 GPUs may fit on 8 B300 GPUs. For inference-heavy services chasing cost per token, B300 offers higher throughput and memory density per card.

The trade-off is power. At about 1400W per GPU, an 8-GPU system requires careful power and cooling planning. Older data centers often need upgrades, and that cost belongs in the total cost of ownership.

3. Why H200 still makes sense

H200 shares the Hopper architecture with H100, so the software stack, kernel libraries and existing cluster experience carry over with minimal migration effort. 141GB is enough for mainstream 70B-400B multi-GPU inference and mid-scale training, while 700W per GPU is friendlier to existing facilities and the system price is significantly lower than B300. For mixed training and inference, budget-sensitive teams or sites with limited power, H200 remains a strong value choice.

4. Selection guidance by workload

  • Online inference, very large models, long context: choose B300 to reduce card count and cost per token.
  • Training and fine-tuning, existing H100 experience: choose H200 for software compatibility and fast deployment.
  • Limited budget or tight power capacity: H200 is safer at 700W per GPU.
  • New large cluster, 2-3 year compute headroom: B300 is more future-proof, but budget for power and cooling upgrades.
  • Mixed workloads: use H200 for training and B300 for inference in a tiered architecture.

5. What else matters in procurement

Beyond the GPU model, CPU choice, memory bandwidth, NVMe storage, InfiniBand fabric and power design all affect real throughput. Ask the supplier for stress-test data and memory-check reports on the exact configuration, and clarify warranty differences between complete servers, modules and refurbished parts.
