Sun SPARC Enterprise T5220 Server
The SPARC Enterprise T5220 is a 2U single‑socket rack‑mount server developed by Sun Microsystems. Powered by one UltraSPARC T2 multi‑core processor, it offers configurable clock speeds of 1.2 GHz, 1.4 GHz or 1.6 GHz. The CPU can be configured with 4, 6 or 8 cores; with 8 hardware threads per core, the maximum thread count reaches 64, delivering outstanding throughput for highly‑threaded enterprise workloads. The processor integrates built‑in crypto‑acceleration engines to offload encryption and decryption operations.
The platform has 16 FB‑DIMM memory slots supporting a maximum memory capacity of 128 GB. It provides six low‑profile PCI‑Express expansion slots for network adapters and storage controllers, and can house up to sixteen 2.5‑inch hot‑swap SAS hard‑disk or SSD drives. Four onboard Gigabit Ethernet ports reduce additional network card requirements. The embedded ILOM service processor enables comprehensive remote monitoring, power control and system administration independent of the host operating system.
This server natively runs Oracle Solaris 10, supporting Solaris Zones (Containers) lightweight virtualization to consolidate multiple application workloads and improve hardware resource utilization. As the higher‑spec sibling of the T5120, the T5220 provides expanded I/O and storage capability. It was commonly used for Java application servers, web tiers, light‑to‑medium database workloads, before being succeeded by the later SPARC T3‑series product line.
